Margate-Coconut Creek Fire Rescue {Aiden Palmer}
Good news: Margate homeowners won’t see an increase in their fire assessment fees.
During the June 5 meeting, the commission passed a resolution establishing the estimated assessment rate for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2024.
Homeowners will pay $300 for the year. Commercial property owners will pay $0.37 per square foot, industrial property owners $0.05 per square foot, and institutional property owners $0.47.
Commissioner Antonio Arserio said it might be better to raise the fire assessment rate a small amount each year rather than $25 or $50 every few years.
“I am glad we don’t have to raise the rates this year, but we should consider incremental increases,” he said.
Mayor Tommy Ruzzano said a recent study conducted on fire assessment found that rates could have been increased to close to $400 annually.
He also suggested that a more minor increase might be the better approach.
