Sujani Atluri and Paulette Daley are working to create a robotics and drone club at Bair Middle School in Sunrise.
They will be teaching the latest technology that goes into robots, drones, and semiconductors. The students will learn how to design, build, program, and eventually drive VEX V5 robots. As they become more skilled, they will be able to enter local and state robotics competitions, according to Daley, who teaches social studies at Bair Middle.
“We use block coding, which is easier for middle school students, and they also learn what it takes to build a VEX robot,” she said.
They were among a group of Broward County public school teachers who spent four days learning about the latest VEX robotics technology at Pines Collegiate Academy 6–12.
The students also learn to collaborate and create a sophisticated product. “One advantage of a robotics club is that the students learn to work as a team to solve problems. They have to work together to build a robot that works,” said Atluri, who teaches math.
The teachers who serve as robotics coaches spent the week learning about VEX robotics and robotic games that will be used in student competitions during the 2025-2026 school year.
For a final activity, the coaches designed, built, and then drove their robots in a game played on a field that resembled a hockey rink.
