Sunrise Man Accused of Forcing His Way Into Ex-Girlfriend’s Home, Strangling Her

A Sunrise man is accused of forcing his way into his ex-girlfriend’s home, strangling her and stealing her cellphone before being arrested by police.

According to a Sunrise Police Department arrest report, Najay Leopold Thompson, 29, was taken into custody on August 17 at his residence near the 4000 block of Northwest 92nd Avenue.

Records show Thompson had warrants connected to an investigation by the Davie Police Department after his ex-girlfriend notified police that she had arrived home at 6:00 a.m. and was walking toward her third-floor apartment, heard someone yelling, and recognized Thompson sitting on the steps near her apartment.

According to police, the woman walked around Thompson, opened her apartment door, and went inside. Thompson allegedly followed her, uninvited. Once inside, Thompson allegedly grabbed the woman around the neck and pushed her farther into the residence.

Police say the woman told detectives that while Thompson had his hands around her neck, she lost the ability to breathe. She said Thompson then grabbed her cellphone and left the residence.

Thompson was arrested following an investigation into the claims and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
