A Lauderhill man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly pointing a handgun at people outside a Sunrise church when he was told its food distribution was not taking place that day.
According to a Sunrise Police Department probable cause affidavit, officers responded on September 15 to the Church of God of Prophecy, located at 7730 West Oakland Park Boulevard, following a report of an armed man.
Police said Dennis Barker, 36, approached a man near a vehicle containing food and asked for some. The man allegedly said the church distributes food on Saturdays and told him it couldn’t help him.
According to the affidavit, Barker became angry and walked several parking spaces away before allegedly removing a firearm from his waistband and pointing it at two people.
Officers found Barker in the church parking lot. When asked whether he had a firearm, Barker allegedly nodded and pointed toward his right pocket. Police recovered a black Glock 42.
Surveillance footage did not capture the alleged assault but showed the initial confrontation and confirmed that Barker approached the group, the affidavit states.
Barker was arrested and taken to the Broward County Main Jail.
