Sportsplex Manhunt Follows Sunrise Police Chase, Multi-Vehicle Crash, Tasing, and Gun Toss

A Sunrise police chase ended in a multi-vehicle crash, Taser deployment, a Sportsplex manhunt, and the recovery of a discarded loaded handgun.

According to a Sunrise Police Department arrest report, Edwin Vega, 44, was arrested August 23 following a pursuit that began with what Sunrise Police described as a routine traffic stop near North Pine Island Road and Northwest 44th Street.

According to a probable cause affidavit, an officer attempted to stop Vega for a tint violation, but police allege he fled at a high rate of speed, which led to a collision after he spun out, crossed into the southbound lanes, and struck another vehicle before coming to a stop with its airbags deployed.

One person involved in the collision suffered injuries and was transported to HCA Woodmont Hospital, police said. Investigators alleged the crash caused bodily injury and damage to multiple vehicles.

Rather than end the pursuit there, police said Vega jumped out and ran toward the Sunrise Sportsplex.

An officer and K-9 unit pursuing him on foot reported seeing Vega throw a black handgun through a fence into the Sportsplex. Police allege Vega then climbed the fence himself, picked up the gun, and continued running west through the park.

The officer fired nine Taser prongs through the fence, according to the affidavit, but only one struck Vega in the back. Police said Vega pulled the prong from his shirt and continued running.

Police established a perimeter, and the search eventually moved into the nearby Sonoma residential neighborhood. An officer ultimately discovered Vega hiding behind a resident’s vehicle in a driveway

A Sunrise Police K9 and multiple officers retraced the areas where Vega had allegedly fled. Investigators eventually located a black handgun in the backyard of a residence separated from the Sportsplex by a wall approximately six to seven feet high.

Vega was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
