La Dona Mexican Seafood and Grill Restaurant was recently cited for 20 health violations during a routine inspection conducted by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
Records of a January 6 inspection show the restaurant at 1800 Sawgrass Mills Circle received several repeat offenses, prompting a follow-up inspection to ensure compliance.
Among the most significant issues noted by inspectors were small flying insects in the kitchen and storage areas and dead insects found in the handwashing sink and dishwasher area.
Inspectors also flagged the discovery of insect traps that were stored in a sink, which was meant solely for handwashing, as a violation. The sinks were later cleaned and sanitized. Additional violations included an accumulation of a black/green mold-like substance inside the ice machine, which was noted as a repeat offense.
A Stop Sale was issued for food found stored at unsafe temperatures. Raw chicken was also found improperly stored above ready-to-eat pineapple, posing a risk of cross-contamination. Inspectors noted that the storage issue was corrected on-site.
Sanitization concerns were another key issue mentioned in the report, as the dishwasher’s chlorine sanitizer was initially measured at 0 PPM, far below the required level for effective cleaning. Employees addressed this by adding more chemicals to reach the proper 100 PPM level.
