The Piper High School football team had two more players officially commit to play college football at the same school as their coach, Quentin Short.
After Antrell McWhirtier and Jahmar Midi each committed to play at St. Thomas University earlier this year, they were followed by Latron Hickson and Davaris Lawson, who committed to Concord University.
‘Great young men and big time football players,” Short said. “Those two were a huge part of our success last year on defense. They always got us in the right call and made big plays.
Hickson was the leading tackler for Piper, helping his team reach the postseason. He says committing was an amazing feeling, and he is ready to play at the next level.
“From the first conversation I had with Coach Dwitney,” Hickson said. “I felt the love and realness from him, and he was the defensive back coach, and I like to have a great relationship with my coaches.”
Hickson began playing football at the age of eight with the Tamarac Cougars. He played two years on varsity and got time at running back as an underclassman. He had 261 yards and a touchdown, and then played his senior year and shined as a cornerback. Hickson recorded a pair of interceptions and also had 39 tackles, finishing his high school career with 37. Before college, Hickson plans to get stronger, faster, and improve his technique.
Lawson is set to play alongside his former teammate and says it feels great to commit and is ready to grind.
“Concord showed love the most when they hit me up, and the coaches are great coaches, so I feel like it’s the fit for me,” Lawson said.
Lawson began playing football at the age of six and represented the Opa Locka Hurricanes and Sunrise Hurricanes. He plaayed two years o varsity and had 64 tackles, two interceptios and one sack as the Bengals picked up a win in the playoffs against Doral Academy before falling to West Broward High School. Lawson hopes to gain a little more weight and get stronger before both players are set to join a team that had their lone win last season come against West Virginia Wesleyan.
