Asahi Restaurant in Sunrise was ordered to shut down after a customer complaint inspection found flying insects landing on cooked chicken, employee hygiene violations, and 20 total health code violations.
According to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Asahi Restaurant, located at 9240 West Commercial Blvd., was ordered to close on July 15 following the inspection. The report shows inspectors observed live flying insects landing on precooked chicken at a food preparation station. The contaminated food was ordered stopped from sale.
Inspectors documented live flying insects throughout the restaurant, including in the dishwashing area landing on clean food containers and a food preparation table, in a storage area landing on a container of cornstarch, and at the cook line landing on an in-use cutting board.
The inspection also noted an accumulation of dead flying insects on fly traps in the kitchen.
In addition to the pest concerns, inspectors cited several sanitation and food safety violations involving employee hygiene.
According to the report, one employee washed their hands without soap, while another used the dishwashing machine sprayer instead of an approved handwashing sink before returning to food preparation without changing gloves.
Inspectors also found a handwashing sink being used to store a food container, rather than remaining available for employee handwashing.
Other violations included walls throughout the kitchen that were soiled with what inspectors described as black mold-like substances and old food residue.
State records show this is the second time Asahi Restaurant has been ordered to close in recent months. The restaurant was also shut down on April 28, 2025, following an inspection that cited a roach infestation.
The restaurant will be allowed to reopen after correcting the violations and receiving approval during a follow-up inspection by state regulators.
