For the second time in less than a year, Asahi Restaurant in Sunrise has been forced to close its doors after health inspectors uncovered food safety violations, including those involving roaches.
Records show that on April 28, inspectors from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation visited the Japanese eatery at 9240 West Commercial Boulevard to conduct a complaint-based inspection.
The inspection report revealed seven violations, including live and dead roaches throughout the kitchen and dining area and mold-like substances on food-contact surfaces.
Live roach activity was observed in the kitchen, and inspectors also found dead roaches under the dishwasher and beneath crates of drinks near the bathroom.
Beyond the bug problem, inspectors flagged additional food safety hazards, including a can opener blade soiled with a mold-like substance and ready-to-eat cooked pork held in the walk-in cooler without proper date marking, despite being prepared more than 24 hours earlier.
The restaurant was allowed a follow-up re-inspection the next day, April 29, during which one live roach was still observed in the kitchen beneath the clean ware wash area.
This isn’t the first time Asahi has faced serious sanitation concerns. On November 29, 2023, the restaurant was shut down after inspectors cited similar roach activity.
