Thanksgiving morning began with a 5K run in Tamarac for about 2,500 dedicated athletes.
The 44th Annual Tamarac Turkey Trot began and ended in front of city hall on November 28. The weather was sunny and cool, conditions many runners would describe as comfortable. After the run, participants enjoyed refreshments and a social event.
Jonathan Werble, the male category’s overall first-place finisher, enjoyed the run and felt good about his performance.
“The course was very flat and fast. It was a good atmosphere for a 5K run, and I loved being a part of it,” said Werble. He lives in Weston and is training for a half-marathon.
Kendall Parrott, the top girls’ cross-country runner at Coral Springs Charter School and one of the leading high school runners in Broward County, won the female division. Julie Esposito, of Parkland, earned second place.
“This was a great race, and I enjoyed running in it. I run mostly longer distance races such as marathons, so I had to run a faster pace today,” she said.
The Turkey Trot brought together people with a wide variety of athletic abilities. High school varsity runners and many individuals competed in high-level running events like marathons and ultra-marathons. Many participants were more interested in personal fitness and came with family and friends.
Damien Michel, of Coral Springs, came in second place in the 25 to 29 male age group.
“This was a lot of fun and a good race,” he said.
Tamarac Mayor Michelle Gomez and commission members attended the event, supporting the local running community. Gomez complimented the runners on their participation.
