“If You See It, Report It’: Animal Advocates Push to End Dog Fighting

Animal welfare advocates will host a public presentation in Fort Lauderdale this week to raise awareness about dogfighting and encourage residents to report suspected animal cruelty.

The Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation will present “Stop the Hurt: Fighting Is Not in Their Nature” on Saturday, June 13, at noon at Broward County Animal Care, 2400 S.W. 42nd St. Attendance is limited, and organizers require advance registration.

According to the coalition, the presentation will educate attendees about how dogfighting operates, warning signs of suspected abuse, responsible ways to report cruelty, humane pet stewardship, and breed-neutral advocacy.

“Dog fighting is violence disguised as entertainment, and far too often it continues because people are afraid and unaware of what they are witnessing,” said Dahlia Canes, director of the Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation. “Dogs are not born fighters. They are made victims of cruelty and exploitation.”

Organizers said the event is intended to dispel misconceptions surrounding fighting dogs while encouraging community members to recognize and report suspected abuse.

The coalition also noted that animal welfare advocates have long identified links between animal cruelty and broader patterns of violence, making public education and early intervention important prevention tools.
