Fresh Out of Patience: Police Say Customer Pulled Gun on Cashier Over Air Freshener

A man is accused of pulling a handgun on a Sunrise store employee and threatening to kill him after an argument over a free air freshener, according to police.

Sunrise Police Department arrest records show Raymond Miller, 52, of Plantation, was arrested July 6 and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill following an incident that occurred June 27 at a business on West Oakland Park Boulevard.

Investigators said the confrontation began when Miller requested an air freshener while an employee was working in one service lane. The employee told Miller there were no air fresheners available in that lane, but that he could receive one after pulling forward while other customers were helped.

Police said Miller became angry after noticing additional air fresheners in the employee’s personal cart and accused the worker of lying. The exchange escalated, with both men exchanging profanity before Miller allegedly threatened the employee, saying, “I will beat your ass.”

Witnesses told police they heard customers screaming and turned to see Miller pointing a handgun directly at the employee while saying, “I will fucking kill you.” The employee said he feared for his life and ran into the business for safety.

An assistant manager told investigators he witnessed the confrontation on the business’s surveillance system and confronted Miller, who allegedly admitted to pointing the firearm because he was upset over “the principle” of being lied to about the air freshener. The manager canceled Miller’s membership, refused him service, and instructed him to leave the property.

Miller was arrested on July 6 after turning himself in at the Sunrise Police station. He was later transferred to the Broward County Jail.

The business in which the crime allegedly took place is redacted in the report.
