Residents hoping for another Italian restaurant option in town will have to wait a little longer.
City staff said in an email Monday that work on Divieto Ristorante will last at least through August or October. In the email, staff said they sent inspectors out on Fri., Feb. 10, after Divieto Ristorante had not been scheduling inspections.
According to officials, the restaurant is replacing general contractors again. The new contractor will be Divieto Ristorante’s third. This follows a September update when a manager at a separate location estimated the new location would open in early 2023.
In an email from Santiago Lopez, chief operating officer, the company estimates the Coral Springs location will open in summer 2023.
Lopez stated Divieto is in its remodeling phase, and they are hoping installation will begin soon.
Divieto is a Miami-based Italian restaurant chain with three locations in Doral, Aventura, and Estero. They proposed opening their fourth location in Sept. 2021.
The Coral Springs location will be at the former Applebee’s site at 2729 N. University Dr., which closed in Feb. 2021 due to pandemic-related difficulties.
Divieto, Italian for “prohibition,” has an atmosphere reminiscent of 1920s Prohibition-era New York. According to the company’s website, the restaurant has decorations that resemble the fashion and zeitgeist of the time.
They offer over 70 Italian dishes, including a wide assortment of antipasti, soups, salads, pasta dishes, meats, and desserts, all made from scratch with local ingredients.
Their signature dish is Ruota di Parmigiano, a Fettucine Alfredo dish tossed in a Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese wheel, a perfect dish for a cheat day. They also have an expansive alcohol menu, including wines, beers, and cocktails, according to its website.
