The North Broward Prep, track and field team, made history on Friday, with the girl’s team winning the League Championship for the first time.
Ella Munoz had a historic day, winning three events and setting a school record. She achieved that in the long jump, triple jump, and 4 x 100 relay with Madelyn Kunz, Alana Amsterdam, and Ivory Edgecomb. Alexa Schwartz also finished first in the javelin to help NBP record 140 points. Ivory Edgecomb, Alana Amsterdam, and Madelyn Kunz finished in the top five on the track. Victoria Depenbrock and Lucia Casacci each picked up two points, while Tessa Dixon finished fifth in the 400 hurdles, and the Eagles placed fifth and seventh in their other relays.
Nina Sanguino came in second place in the long jump and triple jump, with Saleyah Turner coming in third in the discus and javelin on the field. Alexa Schwartz had two more top-five finishes, while Ysamar Pimentel earned fourth in the triple jump.
“It was an honor to compete against some of the most prestigious programs in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County,” Head Coach John Garrish said. “For the first time in school history, the girls team took home the championship trophy with numerous first-place finishes, personal records, and three school records.”
The boys finished in third place with 75 points, highlighted by Christopher Baker winning the 100 meters and the 4 x 100 meter relay with Anthony Mestre, Felix Ostamendy, and Braxton Bylow. Eric Kontos finished second in the javelin, while Jayden Smith placed third in two events. Mac Lobdell also finished in third place, with a great result from Matthew Fullerton in the high jump. Braxton Bylaw, Felix Ostamendy, Ryan Bailey, Sammy Kovari, Zach Amelchenko, and two relay teams earned points.
Both teams will continue their season and are looking to make a run in the postseason beginning in May.
