London Yelder Wins Third Straight District Title. {Piper Wrestling}
Piper High School continues to build momentum during the winter season, as spring sports are officially underway, highlighted by strong performances in wrestling and baseball.
The wrestling team competed in the BCAA Championship, where Immanuel Reid earned a second-place finish, adding another impressive accomplishment to Piper’s winter campaign. The girls’ team has won its third consecutive District Title and will now compete at the State Championship.
On the diamond, the baseball team opened the season with a 5-3 victory over Miami Christian High School, improving to 1-0 for the second straight year. After surrendering a run in the top of the first inning, the Bengals quickly answered with two runs in the bottom half to take their first lead of the season. The Victors tied the game with two runs in the fourth, but Piper responded again with two runs in the fifth before adding an insurance run in the sixth.
Ladainian McKenzie led the offense with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while Joseph Cuminale added an RBI. Jimmy Engle pitched five strong innings, allowing just one earned run, and Tyson Robles closed the door with two scoreless innings, giving up only one hit.
Piper returned to action the next day against ABF Academy but fell 11-9 in a back-and-forth contest. The Bengals held a 9-7 lead entering the final inning before allowing four runs to score. Piper tallied one run in both the first and sixth innings, three in the fourth, and four in the fifth. Austin Engle drove in three runs, while Cuminale, McKenzie, Robles, and Mason Lengley each recorded an RBI.
McKenzie also impressed on the mound, allowing just two hits and one earned run over five innings. Engle came out of the bullpen, with only three of the seven runs charged to him being earned. The Bengals finished 11-10-1 last season and will hit the road for the first time this year on Wednesday, February 18, at 6:30 p.m. against McArthur High School.
Spring sports continue next week, with both softball and flag football beginning their seasons. The softball team opens play on February 18 at 4 p.m. against J. P. Taravella. It marks the program’s first game since 2024, when Piper finished 9-8. Meanwhile, the flag football team, coming off a 12-4 season, will open on Tuesday, February 17, at 7 p.m. against McArthur High School, then return home the following day to face Dillard High School at 6:15 p.m. Last year, the Bengals defeated Cypress Bay High School in the playoffs before falling to Western High School, and they will look to build on that postseason success this spring.
