Piper High School is set for the final month of the athletic season, which has been highlighted by a strong run from its baseball team, as well as success in flag football and track and field.
The baseball team had a busy week with four games, including one in the HSBN Tournament. The Bengals won 17-0 against Boyd H. Anderson High School on March 17 before winning 4-3 in extra innings against Olympic Heights High School. Piper had a lead against Cypress Bay High School but allowed two runs in the final inning before losing their next two games-. Piper was also shut out in one of them, along with their first two games out of spring break against Coral Springs Charter and Nova High School.
The Bengals are 9-5-1 this year and are led offensively by Valentino Pupo. He is hitting .455, while Demetrius Angeletos and Joseph Cuminale are both hitting over .400, with Austin Engle batting north of .300. Piper has hit five home runs this year, with Joel Arroyo hitting three in only five games. Cuminale and Jonathan Rodriguez also have hit homers, with Angeletos leading the team in RBIs.
Rodriguez also leads the Bengals on the mound, pitching to an era of. 34. Jimmy Engle is second on the team in appearances and has pitched well, along with Angeletos, Julius Torres, Jan Rivera, Beckett Noel, and Valentino Pupo, who have all thrown.
The flag football team lost its final game before spring break against Pemrbe Pines Charter 20-12 but responded with a 25-6 win on Tuesday. However, they are still 7-3 this season. They have wins this season against Monarch, Blanche Ely, Pompano Beach, Cooper City, Coconut Creek, J.P. Taravela, and McArthur High School.
The track and field team featured the boys competing in the BCAA North Qualifier, with Josh Tucker taking second place in the 110 hurdles. Alijah Mckeznie placed third in the 400 hurdles and fourth in the 110 hurdles. In contrast, Davaris Lawson, Jordan London, Alijah Pessia, and Nathan Edwards placed fifth in the 4 x 100 relay, along with Ryan Inmon, Ahmad Dejean, Tariq King, and Braden Watkins in the 4 x 800 relay.
Doudley Jean Mary, Andre Wilson, Jahmani Chin-Suer, and Nathan Edwards also ran and came in seventh in the 4 x 400 relay. Decree McCarthy, Djaleel Descombes, Wesley Akins, Giovanny Barnett, and Max Vielot all placed in the top ten.
The girls team’s top result came from Ja’Brea Gordon after placing ninth in the 400 meters. Paris Robinson and Tatiana Jones were next to finish, while Allyson Knowles, Imani Jenkins, and Tashara Connell raced.
They went on to compete in the BCAA Championship at Coral Springs High School, with Lawson, Pessia, Edwards, and Wilson finishing 11th in the 4 x 100 relay and Jean Mary, Wilson Edwards, and Sinclair coming in 15th in the 4 x 400 relay. Medina also qualified and came in 16th in the triple jump.
