
London Yelder Wins District Championship. {Piper Athletics}
Piper High School continued its athletic success with strong performances in wrestling, while several spring sports teams added key victories and notable individual performances.
The wrestling team competed at the District Championships at Coral Springs High School, highlighted by Immanuel Reid’s first-place finish. Aiden Mohammed and Essie Joseph each placed third, while Fabrice Marcelin, Gabriel Reid, Ivan McMichael, Richard Sherrill, and Terrance Payne all finished fourth. Cayden Williams, Jordan Grant, and Ruben Volcy also competed as the Bengals, now prepare for Regionals, scheduled for February 27–28 at South Dade High School.
London Yelder won a third straight District Title for the girls’ team.
Coming off a 12-win season last year, the flag football team opened strong with a 19–0 victory over McArthur High School before edging Dillard High School 24–18 in six overtimes. Regulation ended scoreless, but both teams traded matching point totals throughout overtime, beginning each possession inside the red zone.
The Bengals followed with a 36–0 win over Northwest High School before suffering their first loss of the season, 21–8 against Dillard High School.
After opening the season with a victory, the baseball team has dropped three straight games. The losing streak began when the Bengals allowed a 9–7 lead to slip away in the final inning. They followed with a 13–4 loss to McArthur High School and a narrow 2–1 defeat against Cooper City High School.
Currently, Ladainian McKenzie leads the team in batting average and home runs this season. Tommy Velez is also hitting over .300 and leads the team in RBIs. On the mound, Jimmy Engle has posted a 1.91 ERA while striking out 13 batters across 11 innings.
The softball team played its first game since the 2023–24 season but fell 23–4 against J.P. Taravella in its season opener. The Bengals then lost 16–0 against Fort Lauderdale High School. The Bengals track and field team also turned in strong performances at the Legacy of Legends Season Kickoff Classic, where the boys’ team finished 10th overall with several runner-up finishes. Josh Tucker, Jabez Clarke, Jahmani Chin-Suer, and Dontae Redwood placed second in the 4×100 relay, while Giovanny Barnett finished second in the triple jump. Aaron Haddaway, Ryan Inmon, Tariq King, and Chin-Suer placed fifth in the 4×400 relay, while Branari Smith, Isaiah Alfred, Rashad Sanders, and Breeze David finished ninth in the 4×800 relay.
Individually, Chin-Suer placed fourth in the 100 meters, and Jonah Julien finished fifth in the triple jump. Jabez Clarke, Mafabiens Charles, Patrick Hylton, and Ledger St. Rose each recorded top-10 finishes. Redwood led the Bengals in the 200 meters with an 11th-place finish, while John Hodge and Kris Fuller recorded the team’s top results in the long jump and triple jump, respectively.
The girls’ team finished 14th overall and also found success in relay events. The 4×100 relay team of Allyson Knowles, Samyah Louidor, Tashara Connell, and Aleah Kerr McArthur placed third. The same quartet finished fourth in the 4×400 relay, while Louidor added a fifth-place finish in the 200 meters. Khadeejah Garwood and Sayge Josiah also competed after advancing through the preliminary rounds.
