Carlos Abreu {US Marshall’s Office}
A Sunrise man has pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges, including falsely claiming U.S. citizenship to vote in federal elections and aggravated identity theft.
According to allegations in the charging documents and statements made during court proceedings, Carlos Abreu, 45, is a national of the Dominican Republic who entered the United States illegally about 20 years ago and has lived in the country unlawfully since then.
In 2007, the state of New Jersey issued an arrest warrant for Abreu on charges of kidnapping, sexual assault, endangering a child, and criminal restraint. Abreu moved to Florida and admitted to using the identity of a Puerto Rican citizen, “C.R.V.,” since 2007. Abreu registered to vote in 2016 and renewed in 2020, casting ballots in the 2016 and 2022 elections under the stolen identity. He also used the false identity to obtain a concealed carry permit, purchase firearms, and apply for U.S. passports for himself and his children.
In addition to voter fraud, Abreu pleaded guilty to possessing firearms as an illegal alien and making false statements on a passport application. He faces a mandatory minimum of two years for aggravated identity theft, with potential sentences of up to 15 years for firearm possession, 10 years for passport fraud, and five years for voting offenses. He also faces deportation.
Abreu will be sentenced on June 10, 2025, before U.S. District Judge David S. Leibowitz.
