Andrea Correa {BSO}
A Sunrise woman has been charged in a federal indictment for allegedly submitting fraudulent asylum applications, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida announced.
Andrea C. Correa, 37, was arraigned this week on charges of submitting a fraudulent asylum application in violation of federal law. She faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
According to prosecutors, Correa prepared and submitted an asylum application to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) containing false statements of personal political persecution. Authorities allege the applicant informed Correa that they had not experienced such persecution in their home country, yet Correa proceeded with the submission.
Investigators say Correa has prepared more than 1,000 asylum applications since 2013.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) West Palm Beach and the USCIS Fraud Detection and National Security Directorate (FDNS) Miami Asylum Office.
