Piper High School wrapped up the winter sports season, while the spring sports season is underway.
The boys basketball team went 8-12 in the regular season and reached the second round of the District Tournament following a 58-50 win over West Broward High School. However, they lost 65-45 against Western High School. Their seniors this year are Vashun Johnson and Alexander Pericles.
The girls basketball team finished the season 9-10 following a 47-27 loss against Western High School in the District Tournament. The Bengals were led this year by Talia Docie, who averaged 15.6 points per game, while Janiya Joassin scored 15.2 points per game. Jalya Ellison is the lone senior to graduate this year.
The baseball team began the season with an exciting walk-off win in their first game against Pompano Beach High School, winning 4-3. Piper scored a run in the first inning but fell behind 3-1 before scoring a run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to start the year 1-0 for the first time since 2-18. However, the Bengals lost 9-8 in 11 innings.
The Bengals trailed by five runs heading into the last at-bat but scored five to tie it. Each team scored runs one ninth before the Bulldogs scored the go-ahead run in the 11th. Jonathon Rodriguez, Demetrius Angeletos, Joseph Cuminale, Julius Torres, and Oscar Muniz all had RBIs, and they also retired Tommy Collaro’s number 45.
Since then, they have gone 2-1, losing to Pine Crest School but outscoring Fort Lauderdale and Olympic Heights Community High School 28-1 in their last two games. The Bengals are 3-2 and will face J.P. Taravella High School in their next game on Monday, March 3, at 6 p.m.
The flag football team is 3-0 and has outscored its opponents 56-6 following wins against Blanche Ely, Pompano Beach, and Cooper City High School. The team consists of Samara Roberts, Morcia Stephenson, J’Aliyah Shorter, Rickita Davis, Chelsea Lyons, Ashley Hinds, Lexi Morel, Arianna Gonzalez, Madisen Marsden, Tahlia Doice, Christelle Lozano, Sophia Gedeon, D’Yanni McDowell, Makayla Condon, Jayla Ellison, and Arianna-Rene Terell.
The track and field team also began their season, led by their 4 x 100 relay with Terrance Gillies, Alijah Pessia, Andre Wilson, and Jordan London. They came in seventh, while Aaron Haddaway, Ryan Inmon, Tariq King, and Wesley Atkins placed 19th. Joshua Taylor finished 12th in the javelin, followed by Matthew Coleman.
Raenya Morris, Tashara Connell, Imani Jenkins, Allyson Knowles, Tatiana Jones, Paris Robinson, Justyse Dixon, Aleelah Birch, and Peyton Campbell all ran for the girls, while Deani McDowell placed 13th in the discus.
