Terence Eugene Powell {BSO}
A man faces premeditated attempted-murder charges after intentionally running over a Lauderhill Police officer and a woman with his vehicle multiple times.
According to a Sunrise Police Department report, the attack occurred on February 25 near the 2300 block of North University Drive. An investigation determined that the officer was stopped at a red light at Sunset Strip and North University Drive when an SUV – later identified to be driven by Terence Eugene Powell, 27, of Miami Gardens – rear-ended him. Seconds later, Powell’s vehicle struck the officer’s car again.
Upon activating his emergency lights and exiting his vehicle to assess the situation, the officer was approached by a civilian witness who had stopped to provide a statement. At that moment, Powell accelerated his vehicle and deliberately struck both individuals again, sending them airborne and into a nearby parking lot.
Sunrise PD reports show witnesses reported that Powell then made a three-point turn and deliberately drove at the injured officer once again, striking him a second time. He then reversed and attempted to attack him again but narrowly missed and hit a tree instead.
Powell fled the scene, driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Sunset Strip in an attempt to escape Sunrise PD, which had already been en route to respond to the initial reports of an officer involved in a collision.
Records show Powell’s vehicle was located minutes later near the 4700 block of West Sunrise Boulevard by officers from the Lauderhill and Plantation Police Departments. The eventual arrest report shows that the officers could identify Powell’s vehicle quickly due to the immense front-end damage the car suffered in the crime and a missing front bumper.
Multiple witnesses provided critical evidence, including a woman in a McDonald’s drive-thru and a Tesla owner whose vehicle cameras captured the incident. One witness recorded a portion of the attack on a cellphone, while the Tesla’s security footage corroborated accounts that Powell repeatedly targeted the officer and civilian.
Powell was taken into custody and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
