A man is facing felony robbery and battery charges following a confrontation over the alleged theft of his juice boxes.
On August 26, the Margate Police Department responded to the 4900 block of Southwest 9th Street to a violent assault involving two victims.
According to the police report, Victim 1 stated that he was sitting in his truck when a man, later identified as Oshane Smith, 30, of Margate, approached him, accusing him of stealing juice boxes.
Victim 1 told officers the confrontation escalated when Smith allegedly reached into the truck to take his cell phone and then struck him twice on the left side of his face. The man said Smith continued to attack him as he attempted to exit the vehicle to retrieve his phone.
Records show another man, labeled in the report as Victim 2, was nearby and heard Victim 1 calling for help. He came to the area and witnessed the Smith repeatedly punching him and tried to intervene, but was himself struck multiple times in the chest and face.
Medical records show Victim 2 sustained a severe laceration above his nose and was transported to North Broward Hospital, where he received stitches.
Margate Police records show that when officers arrived at the scene, they observed Smith standing outside his residence. Smith reportedly refused to comply with officers’ request to question him and instead fled inside his home.
After approximately an hour, Smith exited the residence and was detained. Victim 1 and witnesses positively identified him through a show-up identification process.
Smith was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
