Attention all Mahjong beginners — the local library is hosting a special event to teach you the essentials of this popular and strategic game.
The North Regional Broward College Library will host a “Learn to Play Mahjong” event in Room 226 on Saturday, September 21, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
This event marks the start of a four-week series designed to teach the basic rules and strategic thinking behind Mahjong gameplay.
Mahjong is an ancient tile-based game that originated in China. Four players typically play the game and build sets and pairs from a hand of 13 tiles, drawing and discarding tiles until they complete a winning hand.
Known for its complex rules and strategic elements, like chess, Mahjong is considered as much a social game as it is a competitive game, making it a perfect fit for beginners who want to interact with fellow community members.
Limited seats are available, and there is early registration for those interested in learning how to play.
Participants interested in registering for the event are encouraged to purchase the 2024 Official Standard Hands and Rules before attending the classes to familiarize themselves with the game.
The book can be found on the National Mah Jongg League website at www.nationalmahjongleague.org or through Amazon.
