Local races for the 2024 elections are heating up as three commission positions, Seats One, Three, and Five, are up for grabs in the upcoming cycle.
As of October 2, there have been no candidates who intend to run for Seat One or the mayoral position. The current mayor, Scott Brook, is able to run for reelection in 2024.
In the race for Seat Three, incumbent commissioner Nancy Bowen is the only candidate who has filed to run for election. She officially kicked off her reelection campaign on Sept. 27.
Since the most recent publicly available campaign finance reports are available through June 30, and Bowen announced her reelection after, no campaign donation reports are available as of press time.
Bowen made history in 2020 when she became the first Black woman elected to the commission in the city’s history.
“From enhancing the quality of life for all to empowering our youth, we’ve made remarkable strides together. But there’s more to achieve,” she posted on social media. “It’s been an honor, and I’m not done yet.”
For Seat Five, Commissioner Joy Carter will not seek reelection in 2024 due to term limits. The race for Carter’s seat is also off to a slow start. As of press time, the only candidate who has filed to run for her seat is Jose “Joe” Morera, Sunshine Water Control President.
Morera has extensive volunteerism experience in the city, where he serves on the multicultural advisory committee, the charter review board, and the planning and zoning board.
He previously ran for city commission in 2020, coming in third in a six-way race behind Randal Cutter and Bowen.
According to the most recent publicly available campaign finance reports, through June 30, Morera has raised $3,300 through self donations.
While the races are starting slowly, residents still have plenty of time to get involved. Interested residents should contact City Clerk Georgia Elliott at clerks@coralsprings.gov or 954-344-1065.
