A Coral Springs woman was arrested and charged with the battery of a pregnant woman after a physical altercation with her neighbor allegedly led to the woman’s miscarriage.
On February 23, a physical altercation between the victim and her neighbor, later identified as Michelle Maryann Burke, 43, of Coral Springs, resulted in Torres reporting the incident to the Coral Springs Police Department and Broward Health Coral Springs that on February 27, alleging after days of discomfort, pain, and bleeding, she had a miscarriage she alleges was a direct result of her fight with Burke.
The victim reported to officers that the altercation with Burke began when she confronted Burke with evidence that she was having sexual relations with the victim’s ex-boyfriend.
During the verbal altercation, the victim told police Burke threatened to kill her, struck her, then kicked her in the stomach while on the ground. The victim told police she began experiencing pain and bleeding from her vagina shortly after.
According to police, the victim believed she was approximately 12 weeks pregnant at the time of the altercation and had told Burke during a previous argument she was pregnant, a substantial detail that alleges Burke knew of the fact before kicking the victim in the stomach.
The report says the victim spent a few days following the altercation attempting to rest to avoid a miscarriage but that the pain and symptoms only grew more intense.
After days of discomfort, the victim was admitted to the Emergency Room, where she confirmed the altercation with doctors who told police after the examination the victim was no longer pregnant and had signs and symptoms of a recent miscarriage.
The arrest report shows upon questioning, Burke admitted to being in a physical altercation with the victim and threatening to kill her but did not remember if she kicked the victim.
After completing interviews and an investigation, officers developed probable cause for aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, arrested Burke, and transported her to the Broward County Main Jail. Burke was later released after posting a $15,000 bond.
