For one last time, seniors from Monarch High School got to play on their field while several other students received awards.
Monarch Baseball
The Monarch baseball team seniors are Jerome Shephard, Dominic Guzman, Jael Hernandez, Adriel Gonzalez, Jacob Hennessey, Alejandro Cruanas, Alex Fogel, Nick Dematteom, and Daniel Ophime. They beat Coral Springs High School 2-0 in their first postseason behind a complete game shutout from Danny Tartaglia before losing to the three-time reigning State and National Champions in Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
Monarch Softball
The Monarch softball team completed their season. Their seniors were Kylie Kim and Mary Miannay, who have helped the Knights to 10 wins this year, including the first win for their new coach, Andy Aronofsky.
Despite ending the regular season on a three-game losing streak, the Knights beat Coral Springs High School, Piper, Fort Lauderdale, Northeast, Deerfield Beach, Plantation, South Broward, and J.P. Taravella, outscoring their opponents 125- 6. However, They eventually lost 11-8 to West Boca Raton High School on Tuesday, April 30, at 6:30 p.m.
Monarch Volleyball
The Monarch boys volleyball team seniors are Andy De Hoyos, Victor Ramos, Logan Campbell, Joaquin Zurbriggen, and Camilo Condumi. The Knights beat Coconut Creek, Highland Christian, Hollywood Hills, Coral Glades, Plantation, J.P. Taravella, Miramar High School, and Coral Springs Charter. They lost in three sets against CalvaryC Christian Academy in the District Final.
Coconut Creek Volleyball
The Coconut Creek High School volleyball team honored Erron Brown, Kyron Myers, Fabrini Labissierre, Diamion Millwood, Thadeus WIlliams, Vincent Beckimistri Smith, and Julian Ferdilus. The Cougars finished the regular season with a record of 9-8 after starting 0-4. They beat Boyd H. Anderson, Miramar, Hallandale, Stranahan, Plantation, Deerfield Beach, Piper, Franklin Academy, and South Plantation High School before losing in three sets against Deerfield Beach High School in their first playoff game.
Track and Field
The Monarch boys track and field team was led by Josh Doerfler, who finished third in the discus. Caleb Geddis, Nathan Green, Tristan Philogene, and Patrick Pierre placed 11th, with Mark Harris, Dominic Savio, Anthony Potenzano, and Daniel Robinson finishing 12th in the 4 x 400 relay. Individually, Christoper Belizaire and Joshua Reneau came in 13th in their events. The girls top result came from Country Johnson in the shot put. She also came in tenth in the discus while competing in the 4 x 100 relay with Katrice Burke, Saniah Whyte, and Kennedy Stephenson. Katrice Burke, Saniah Whyte, Kennedy Stephenson, and Faith Hannah ran in the 4 x 400 relay, with Burke also competing in the 400 meters individually.
Coconut Creek’s boys’ team, consisting of Jermaine Gordan, Zanii Miller, Godson Sinelien, and Keon Roy, finished sixth in the 4 x 100 relay. Gordon also came in eighth in the 200 meters, Tyler Joseph placed 10th in the 400 meters, and Sinelien came in 12th in the 100 meters. Next, these teams will continue to prepare for the District Championship in May.
Awards
The Broward County Athletic Association has announced the finalists for the Brian Piccolo Award, honoring senior athletes for their outstanding achievements in football, academics, and community service. Josh Dofler received the award from Monarch High School, while Godson Sinelien won from Coconut Creek.
The BCAA also handed out their scholar-athlete awards, with Zackery Driscoll, Jayce Duysek, Rachel Law, Veronica Perez-Mena, Valeria Aguilar, Cody DeMayo, and Rashaad Falconer winning from Monarch and Vincent Beck, Ashley Dorvil, Fabrini Labissiere, Nejma Robinson, Makiyah Shaw, Sinelien, and Jadha Southerland receiving the award from Coconut Creek.
