The J.P. Taravella baseball team had a historic night, officially naming their field after the late Jason Stein and adding several more athletes to the hall of fame.
Stein, who served as both a coach and athletic director at J.P. Taravella, passed away in 2020 after battling complications of COVID-19 for three weeks, leaving behind his wife, Michele, and daughters Hailey and Ilana.
Ilana described the celebration of her father’s life as a fitting tribute to the legacy he left behind.
“This celebration was extra special too, because it happened at my dad’s absolute favorite place in the whole world, which is now completely dedicated to him,” Stein said. “The group that put the gate and event together worked so hard to make everything incredibly perfect, even down to constructing the arch and entrance gate to pay homage to Yankee Stadium.”
For the Hall of Fame, Head Coach Joe Giummule thanks graduates John Cohen, Dan Blubaugh, and Chris Basso for putting it together.
“John approached me about starting a Hall of Fame in the fall, and I told him it was a great idea. But before we could do that, we needed to finish the entrance. Thanks to his Cohen and sons’ wealth management, we were able to tie the entrance and the Hall of Fame walk together,” said Giummule.
Josh Toale, Steven “Scooby” Morgan, Eric Genden, Todd Ozias, Matt Ford, Alex Froloff, Robbie Widlansky, Coach Larry Napp, Coach Sal Desantis, Coach Mike Moss, Stein and the 1984 District Championship Team were all inducted.
The Trojans fell 5-1 against Spruce Creek for only their sixth loss of the season. Anthony Quigley knocked in the only run as The Trojans are 14-6 this year and had an impressive extra-inning win earlier in the week against The North Classic Academy. However, they fell 3-2 against West Broward High School on Friday and will play Belen Jesuit in their next game on Tuesday, April 16 at 6 p.m.
