Ty Quez Prince Demps {BSO}
An 18-year-old was arrested after Sunrise Police said he stole a car from a Mobil gas station while the owner clung to the hood before suffering a broken leg in a crash.
According to a Sunrise Police Department arrest report, Ty Quez Prince Demps, of North Lauderdale, faces charges including carjacking, leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, and driving without a valid license.
Police said the incident happened around 6:34 a.m. on May 11 at a Mobil gas station located at 6099 West Sunrise Boulevard. Investigators allege Demps entered a white 2005 Toyota Camry that had been left running and unattended near the business entrance.
As Demps attempted to drive away, the vehicle’s owner reportedly jumped onto the hood to stop the theft. Detectives said Demps continued driving westbound on Sunrise Boulevard while the victim held onto the moving car.
The fleeing vehicle then sideswiped another driver before crashing into a concrete pole, according to investigators. The victim was thrown to the ground during the crash and suffered a broken leg. Police said Demps exited through the passenger side and ran northbound along Sunset Strip.
Witnesses described Demps as a heavyset Black male wearing a white shirt and red pants, and investigators said the entire incident was captured on surveillance video from the gas station.
While officers investigated the crash scene, another officer reportedly spotted a Broward County Transit bus carrying a passenger matching Demp’s description. Police followed the bus into Lauderhill, where he exited near Northwest 56th Avenue and Sunrise Boulevard and was detained.
Police said Demps admitted to taking the vehicle and driving away while the victim was on the hood.
Demps was arrested and transported to the Broward Main Jail, where he is held without bond.
