A man is facing multiple felony charges, including burglary during a state of emergency and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, following a series of car break-ins in the Oriole Golf community amid Hurricane Milton.
On October 8, during Hurricane Milton, the Margate Police Department responded to reports of suspicious activity involving multiple suspects attempting to break into vehicles at the Oriole Golf & Tennis community.
According to MPD records, while Florida was under a State of Emergency order, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a call about three male suspects – one, later identified as the driver, Brian Richardson, 36, of Apopka – who were seen pulling on door handles of several vehicles near the 7700 block of Golf Circle Drive.
Records indicate multiple witnesses described the individuals as three black males wearing black hoodies who were reportedly last seen heading westbound through the community after attempting to gain entry into numerous vehicles.
Responding MPD officers canvassed the area in search of the suspects. Eventually, police radio reported that one of the suspects had entered a white Lexus SUV driven by Richardson and fled the scene.
A brief chase was ensured before officers could locate the vehicle near the 7600 block of Strawberry Lane and initiate a traffic stop.
Upon arrival as a backup unit, officers detained Richardson and the passenger of the vehicle, who matched the witness descriptions.
During questioning, Richardson admitted to driving a group of juveniles into different neighborhoods to canvass the area. The driver also confirmed that the juveniles exited the vehicle twice and returned with items.
Records show a vehicle search uncovered a window puncher tool in the backseat, loose change, and a gift bag containing several new clothing items with price tags still attached.
A credit card and a Florida license plate were also found in the vehicle. Further investigation led officers to the registered owner of the license plate, who reported that their car had been burglarized. The credit card also belonged to the same victim.
Richardson was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He was later released after posting a $13,000 bond.
