A La Super Markette employee was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly brandishing a handgun at a customer during a dispute over a lottery ticket.
On June 12, the Margate Police Department responded to a disturbance at La Super Markette at 300 South State Road 7 in which a customer alleged a cashier was threatening them with a firearm.
According to records, MPD officers spoke with the victim upon arrival, who recounted the events leading up to the altercation.
According to the victim, he and the store employee, Jose Pena Cabrera, 23, of Tamarac, argued over the validity of a lottery ticket.
The victim told MPD that the situation quickly escalated when Pena lifted his shirt to reveal a firearm tucked into his right hip. Placing his hand on the weapon, the victim allegedly threatened him, repeatedly asking, “Do you want to fight?”
Arrest records show that after conducting interviews, officers reviewed the video surveillance footage from La Super Markette, which corroborated the victim’s account of the incident.
The footage clearly showed Pena lifting his shirt, exposing the firearm, and making a threatening statement. Additionally, MPD records show a witness at the scene confirmed the victim’s version of events.
Pena was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He was later released after posting a $7,500 bond.
