The Eagle Ridge Elementary School Speech and Debate Team debuted on November 7 at the NEAST competition held at Coral Glades High School.
Despite it being the club’s inaugural event, the team left a lasting impact. Ten of its members earned medals and showcased exceptional skill and dedication.
The team, consisting of 20 fourth and fifth-grade students, is led by Jessica Schroeder, a fifth-grade teacher and debate coach.
The young orators competed in four categories: Declamation, Original Oratory, Interpretation, and Duo Interpretation, standing out against teams from several local schools.
Schroeder said the team dedicated a lot of time and energy to practicing for this event.
“Although we felt that the odds may not have been in our favor with it being our first competition, my team exuded extreme confidence when entering their rooms and sheer excitement when exiting,” adding that she was impressed by ‘each and every one of them.’
The Eagle Ridge Elementary team plans to compete in two more tournaments, one in February and another in April.
Schroeder expressed her confidence in the students’ continued growth and support for each other, hoping they will bring home more victories and invaluable experiences from each event.
