A Coral Springs man is accused of aggravated assault and drug possession after a road rage incident in which he allegedly brandished a firearm at another driver.
On August 15, the Coral Springs Police Department responded to the area of West Sample Road and University Drive amid reports of a road rage incident involving a weapon, including a call from the victim who reported the incident while it was happening.
Joshua Michael Phillips, 38, of Boca Raton allegedly flashed a firearm during a heated exchange between two vehicles heading westbound on Sample Road, according to witnesses and the police report.
As officers approached the intersection of Sample Road and Coral Springs Drive, the arrest report showed they spotted vehicles matching the descriptions of both Phillips’ and the victim.
Records show as officers attempted to catch up to the vehicles, Phillips made a quick evasive left turn down 112th Avenue while the victim’s car made a U-turn and headed east on West Sample Rd.
After a traffic stop, the suspect initially appeared to comply. However, he allegedly abruptly made a U-turn and attempted to flee at a high rate of speed.
Eventually, Phillips was cornered by patrol vehicles near Northwest 110th Avenue. Officers were able to take him into custody without incident. Upon questioning, Phillips immediately requested a lawyer and refused to answer questions.
Officers searched Phillip’s vehicle and discovered a small 9mm handgun in a hidden compartment to the left of the steering column. The report indicates that at its discovery, the gun was fully loaded and had a red dot laser sight attached, which was activated. A holster for the handgun was also found empty in the driver’s door pocket.
Police contacted the victims, who said Phillips got into a verbal altercation with them at a traffic light near 441 and West Sample Road when he allegedly pulled out his firearm and flashed it at them.
Subsequent searches of Phillips’ vehicle resulted in discovering multiple drugs, including cannabis, THC gummies, and psilocybin mushrooms. A half-empty bottle of Tito’s vodka was also found inside the car.
The arrest report shows that during transportation to the Coral Springs Police Department for booking, Phillips repeatedly claimed that he shouldn’t be charged and blamed the victims for their driving behavior.
Phillips was later transported to Broward Health Coral Springs for medical clearance after reporting numerous times he felt unwell.
Officers requested and collected a DNA sample from Phillips him during his medical visit. It is not detailed in the report what the sample for taken for.
Upon clearance, he was taken to the Broward County Main Jail, where he was later released after posting a $15,000 bond.
