After years of waiting, Coral Glades High School is closer to getting an auditorium.
The Broward County School Board recently approved a $36.9 million expenditure for designing and constructing a full auditorium, including a black box theater.
According to Coral Glades Principal Dr. Mark Kaplan, the auditorium is long overdue and necessary for the school’s performing arts groups and assemblies.
The black box—or smaller theater—will also allow large and small activities to take place concurrently. According to Kaplan, the new auditorium will include approximately 800 seats and will be similar to Monarch High School’s.
“We have not been able to hold major assemblies or other events on campus because we have not had an auditorium,” said Kaplan.
According to Kaplan, the Coral Glades band, orchestra, theater, dance, and other performing arts groups have had to perform at the auditoriums at J.P. Taravella and Coral Springs High School or the Coral Springs Center for the Arts.
If an organization such as the National Honor Society needed to hold an induction ceremony, it would take place in the gymnasium or the cafeteria. According to Kaplan, an assembly for parents would also be held in the gym.
The goal is to begin construction within a year, but it may take longer.
Coral Glades was built in 2004 without an auditorium because of [BCPS] financial issues. According to Kaplan, an effort was made to build one in 2008, but the economic crisis prevented it.
Kaplan emphasized that the money for the auditorium is coming from capital funds reserved for building projects. The money cannot be used for other purposes, such as teacher raises.
