A Coconut Creek microbrewery is channeling Uncle Sam this Friday and wants YOU – to eat a lot of hot dogs.
Rule G Brewing Company, the popular restaurant and craft beer hangout at 4800 W. Hillsboro Blvd., suite A12, is looking for at least five contestants to compete in its inaugural Independence Day weekend hot dog eating contest on July 5 at 6 p.m.
If Co-owner and General Manager Edward Reardon can find the five or more volunteers necessary to make the event happen, he’ll reward the winner with a beer lover’s dream: a free, weekly four-pack of any Rule G Brewing Co. 16-ounce draft beer of their choice, which they can pick up once a week for a month.
“They have five minutes to eat as many hot dogs as possible,” said Reardon, 40, whose idea for the contest was inspired by the annual Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest held in Brooklyn. “I’ll probably get a picture of the winner and make a plaque to put on the wall somewhere.”
The contest entry fee is $10, and participation is limited to the first ten people who register. All contestants must be at least 21 and have proof of age. To enter, call the restaurant at 954-531-6122 or stop by with this signed waiver form. Participants can also enter by contacting the restaurant on any of its social media channels.
Rule G’s hot dog eating contest has the following rules:
- Water will be supplied for washing down hot dogs and buns.
- Dunking hot dogs and buns in water is permitted, as is crunching up buns.
- Condiments are allowed.
- At the end of five minutes, any hot dog still in a contestant’s mouth will count toward their total as long as it is swallowed.
- Contestants are not allowed to touch any hot dogs or buns before the starting whistle.
- Any contestant who breaks any of the rules will be disqualified.
Would-be contestants can check Rule G’s Facebook page for updates on whether enough participants sign up to hold the event.
Non-participants who want to enjoy the fun are also encouraged to attend, whether or not the hot dog eating contest is held, Reardon said.
During the festivities, raffle drawings for prize baskets will also be conducted, with each raffle ticket selling for $5. Musician Taylor James Davis will perform.
“I’m a big sports fan and watch the Nathan’s contest on ESPN, so I thought I would bring a smaller version to the brewery here and give Coconut Creek a good time,” Reardon said.
