Two men have been charged with mail theft after surveillance footage helped federal investigators identify the suspects in a string of mailbox break-ins at a Sunrise apartment complex.
According to federal prosecutors, Wilfredo Rivero, 31, and Fernando Bernabe Rodriguez, 28, were caught on camera prying open communal mailboxes and removing mail during two separate incidents in late April.
On April 26, surveillance video captured Rivero alone forcibly opening a cluster of mailboxes and removing their contents. Just two days later, on April 28, Rivero returned—this time accompanied by Rodriguez—and the two men were again seen tampering with another set of mailboxes.
According to a statement from the Department of Justice, CBS News Miami aired the footage on May 9, prompting several tips to flood the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s national hotline. The public’s response proved instrumental in identifying Rivero and Rodriguez, leading to their indictment.
The Sunrise and Hialeah Police Departments also supported the investigation, which was led by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
