Sunset Hammock, an $850,000 art installation in Sunset Point Park, is now open to the public.
Designed by Margi Glavovic Nothard and completed in November 2023, it features an observational boardwalk, which includes a modular red aluminum walkway and a large community periscope measuring 20 feet by 3 feet, offering public views into the Everglades.
Mayor Michelle Gomez said the city has been looking forward to seeing the art installation fully open and available for residents to enjoy.
“It is unique, interactive, and multifaceted, incorporating art, science, and community. It will allow our residents to see the Everglades and learn more about its ecosystem,” she added.
Located across the Sawgrass Expressway from the Everglades, the installation is named after a “hammock” in a national park, a habitat found at higher elevations. The project integrates the adjacent wetland with Sunset Point Park and includes an educational children’s art program in collaboration with the Young At Art Museum.
Gomez said the installation will be used as a community gathering place and space for artists to enjoy and capture the Florida nature from the elevated platform.
Located in Vice Mayor Morey Wright’s district, he told Tamarac Talk that residents have consistently expressed their desire for more green spaces, beautification, and activities.
“I am thrilled to witness Sunset Hammock fulfill all of their needs. This will greatly enrich the experiences of our residents by allowing them to enjoy the lush greenery and the spectacular views of our majestic Everglades,” he said.
Commissioner Elvin Villalobos is excited to see the art installation finally completed and put to good use. “It provides lovely photo opportunities during the sunset. I have been there several times and really enjoyed it.”
According to the Glavovic Studio, the project was awarded an “NEA Our Town Grant,” a “Land and Water Conservation Fund Cultural Facilities Grant,” and an “AIA Fort Lauderdale Honor Award.”
“We hope the residents will come to the ribbon cutting to see the new interactive art installation,” said Gomez. “The Sunset Hammock is another beautiful destination in Tamarac that the city’s residents and guests will enjoy.”
The Ribbon Cutting, originally scheduled for May 8, has been postponed.
Sunset Point Park is located at 11000 W. McNab Road.
