Three Marvel comic books worth $7,500 each were stolen from a Lauderhill comic store last Thursday, according to the business.
Longtime store employee Donna Macfarlane said Amazing Spider-Man #1, Incredible Hulk #1, and X-Men #1 were swiped from behind glass casing during business hours at Tate’s Comics at 4566 N. University Dr.
“They picked the lock because we keep them behind a glass case during our open hours, and they were smuggled out,” Macfarlane told Tamarac Talk.
Macfarlane said the shop provided Lauderhill Police with surveillance footage from the day of the theft, and police are reviewing the video.
“It is beyond crazy that a crime like this happened,” the business said in a Facebook post on Monday. “We are a family-owned business, so this is a devastating hit.”
The stolen comic books are among the most sought-after by collectors.
Each issue was graded by PGX Comics, a professional grading service that authenticates and assigns ratings to comic books based on their condition.
Macfarlane said Tate’s has been open since 1993 and has a devoted following among comic book lovers of all ages.
The shop said in its Facebook post, “If anyone has any info at all, please let us know!”
Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Tate’s Comics at 954-748-0181 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
