Monarch and Coconut Creek High School kicked off the football season, meeting in the Kickoff Classic Game on Friday.
After a tight first half, Monarch shined in the second half and picked up a 34-12 win. Brelan Mareus opened the scoring for Monarch, who took an 8-0 lead after the two-point conversion.
The Cougars got on the board with a score, but Samari Reed recovered a fumble and scored to increase the lead to eight before a late second-quarter touchdown from Coconut Creek.
Monarch controlled the game from then on, with Reed, Antwaun Powell, and Jaylin Woods catching touchdown passes behind a strong game from the offensive line. They did not allow a sack, while their defensive line had five sacks, a safety, and a forced fumble.
“We are just getting started, and the best is yet to come,” Head Coach Calvin Davis said.
The Knights previously won their second straight District Title and first Regional Championship in school history. They will play Peachtree Ridge High School in their first game on August 22 at 4 p.m.
Coconut Creek is coming off a season in which it went 10-3 and reached Regionals. It will play its first game of the regular season on Thursday, August 22, against Northwestern High School at 8 p.m.
