Traffic homicide detectives this week arrested a Coral Springs man allegedly behind the wheel during a fatal hit-and-run crash, authorities said.
Willian Eduardo Beltran Velasquez, 31, was allegedly driving a Nissan Rogue on October 13 in the 1700 block of North Dixie Highway in Pompano Beach when the SUV struck a man in the roadway sometime before 4:15 a.m., according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Responding to a 911 call about a person in the middle of the road, BSO deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue paramedics arrived to find Don Larkin suffering from terminal injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle, investigators said.
Larkin was pronounced dead at the scene. Additional details about him were not made public.
BSO detectives determined that vehicle parts found at the scene of the crash indicated the hit-and-run vehicle was a 2008 to 2013 silver Nissan Rogue with front-end damage.
On Sunday, Oct. 20, BSO detectives said they found a Nissan Rogue in Coral Springs with damage consistent with having struck a pedestrian.
“The vehicle damage profile was consistent with the pieces that were collected the night of the crash,” BSO said in a press release Tuesday.
Detectives contacted the Nissan’s owner, Velasquez, and arrested him on charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving death and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, according to BSO.
Velasquez was booked into the Broward County Jail. Bond information was not immediately available on Tuesday.
