A Coral Springs man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after forcibly breaking down the door of a woman’s bedroom using a hammer.
On September 22, the Coral Springs Police Department responded to a domestic violence incident at the 3400 block of Coral Springs Drive.
According to records, officers received a call from the victim at the residence, who claimed that following a dispute with a man, later identified as Edgar Fabian Velazquez Franco, 43, of Coral Springs, she sought refuge in the primary bedroom and locked the door out of fear he would assault her, as she claims he had in the past.
The victim told officers that while she hid in the bedroom, Franco forcibly knocked down the door with a steel hammer, pushed her onto the bed, raised the hammer ahead of his head, and said, “I’m going to kill you.”
The victim told officers that in addition to the death threats, Franco had threatened to kill her and harm her children if she called the police. In desperation, she fled the residence but returned to retrieve her second cellphone to call 911.
Upon arrival, officers contacted Franco, who admitted a verbal dispute occurred but vehemently denied any physical aggression or threats. He also admitted having hammers for work but claimed they were unrelated to the incident.
With no visible injuries to the victim or Franco, officers were unclear what had transpired until the victim provided them with a recorded audio clip of the altercation.
The recording captured her pleas for Franco to put down the hammer and his threats to break her face.
After conducting a thorough investigation, officers concluded the evidence against Franco, including the victim’s sworn taped statement and the audio recording, supported charges of domestic battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without the intent to kill.
Franco was placed under arrest and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He was later released after posting a $16,000 bond.
