Firefighters said a fire at Calypso Cove in Margate caused an estimated $530,000 in damage to the city-owned property.
The blaze broke out in the parking lot of the water park and aquatic facility at 6200 Royal Palm Boulevard on June 9 around 1 p.m., according to a Margate Police Department incident report.
Surveillance footage reviewed by officers showed that a large plastic tarp had caught fire, apparently due to sun exposure, the report states. The flames spread and damaged multiple pieces of a large waterslide, wooden pallets, and construction equipment before firefighters extinguished the blaze.
The scorched equipment had been placed in the parking lot because the city pool was undergoing ongoing construction and renovations.
According to a Margate Fire Department report, a city truck suffered minor smoke damage during the fire. Flames also damaged a light pole in the parking lot.
The fire department report states that firefighters estimated the value of the items damaged or destroyed in the fire at $430,000, with an additional $100,000 in estimated damages caused to the property itself.
Police said they saw no suspicious activity before the fire broke out.
