A 24-year-old Coral Springs man has been criminally charged for slashing a pro-Israel banner outside Bagel Time Cafe in Miami Beach, police said.
Nour Eldeen Ashraf Abaido, 24, is charged with criminal mischief with prejudice for damages over $200 and under $1,000 for the Oct. 28, 2023 incident, records show.
According to investigators, Abaido exited the front passenger door of an orange Ford GT Mustang that was stopped in the middle of the road outside the business at 3915 Alton Rd. In a crime caught on video, Abaido allegedly walked up to the business and unsuccessfully tried to remove a “Pro-Israel” banner displayed in front of the restaurant, according to a Miami Beach Police press release.
Abaido then allegedly began slashing the banner, which read “Bagel Time proudly stands with Israel,” with a sharp object. The crime caused significant damage valued at approximately $400, police said.
After allegedly committing the crime, Abaido returned to the Mustang, got in the front passenger seat, and fled toward the Julia Tuttle Causeway, police said.
With the support of the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office Hate Crimes Unit and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office’s Violent Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response (VIPER) unit, an arrest warrant was executed, and Abaido was taken into custody without any further incident for the bagel shop crime, police said.
Last month, an unidentified woman was caught on video vandalizing and stomping on Israeli and American flags she had torn down outside the same bagel shop. No arrest has been announced in that case.
“Acts of antisemitism in the United States and throughout the world are on a dramatic rise,” Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner said in a written statement. “This is a serious concern for the Jewish people worldwide, and we are making a statement here in Miami Beach that acts of antisemitism will be enforced and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
Court records show Abaido was ordered held on a $25,000 bond. Records show the bond was paid, with a judge setting release conditions that include house arrest and electronic monitoring for Abaido. He was also ordered to stay away from Bagel Time Café and its owner.
As of Friday, however, records show Abaido remained jailed at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami. Records did not indicate whether he had entered a plea. Online records show that a public defender was appointed to his case, but the attorney’s name was not listed.
“This act, fueled by hate, has no place in the City of Miami Beach, and I am immensely proud of our investigators or their diligence and meticulousness, which led to a successful apprehension,” Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones said in a written statement.
In addition to the criminal mischief case, records show Abaido has racked up 18 traffic violation cases in Broward County – three of them classified as criminal – since 2017. The cases included multiple instances in which Abaido was accused by law enforcement of driving with a suspended license, records show.
In the most recent traffic case, Sunrise Police cited Abaido for driving with a suspended license in the 2100 block of N. University Drive on Nov. 12, according to the citation. Less than two weeks earlier, on Oct. 31, he was cited for speeding and driving with a suspended license on Lagos De Campo Boulevard in Tamarac, records show.
Abaido, who pleaded not guilty in the recent traffic cases, was driving a 2021 BMW during both traffic stops, police said. The citations list an address for Abaido in the 8300 block of Sands Point Boulevard in Tamarac.
