Jill Finkelstein showcased remarkable perseverance by completing the New York City Marathon just 12 weeks after undergoing knee surgery.
The journey began for the 48-year-old Coconut Creek resident with a knee injury sustained during a routine training session.
“I immediately knew something was terribly wrong, but I’m determined, so I kept running on it that day before I realized that the pain wasn’t going to pass,” Finkelstein said. “After consulting Daniel Kanell, M.D., an orthopedic specialist with Broward Health, an MRI revealed a meniscus tear requiring surgery.”
Referred to Jason Walters, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, Finkelstein expressed her goal to run the marathon in 12 weeks. Dr. Walters performed a successful outpatient arthroscopic partial meniscectomy at Broward Health Imperial Point.
“Dr. Walters was so friendly and understanding, he went above and beyond explaining the surgery and educating me on the anatomy of my knee,” Finkelstein said. “I knew I was in very good hands.”
The surgery lasted about 20 minutes, and with the support of Broward Health’s nurses, she experienced minimal pain and began intensive physical therapy two weeks later.
Despite the usual 18 to 20 weeks of marathon conditioning, Finkelstein’s determination led her to create a plan incorporating continuous rehabilitation and three weeks of training. Dr. Walters praised her strong will and determination, which significantly impacted her rapid recovery.
With support from her medical team, Finkelstein crossed the finish line of the 26.2-mile marathon. She continued to heal with physical therapy and successfully completed the Tokyo marathon in early March, achieving her personal best time.
“I started running marathons at age 40. For me, it’s about more than just running. Thanks to my excellent care at Broward Health, I can continue enjoying my passions,” Finkelstein added.
