Coconut Creek Community Fear Loss of Equestrian Lifestyle

Residents of the Vinkemulder neighborhood in Coconut Creek love their equestrian lifestyle and don’t want the planned large developments to encroach on their way of life.

On March 6, members of the community and city officials held a meeting where their concerns were discussed.

Coconut Creek is preparing a study and master plan for the neighborhood to explore ways to preserve and enhance its agricultural and equestrian character.

“As with most remaining rural areas in Broward County and South Florida, the residents in this neighborhood are concerned about the development pressures and an interest in this neighborhood that may not be compatible with the equestrian, agricultural, and low-density residential character,” said Justin Proffitt, assistant director department of sustainable development for Coconut Creek.

Proffitt reports that residents of Vinkemulder are worried about the possibility of increased traffic in their neighborhood if more intense development takes place. Based on the feedback gathered during the community meetings, it appears that the majority of residents prefer maintaining the current state of their properties, which are either equestrian or agricultural and consist of low-density single-family residential areas.
