Scan-dalous Scheme: Receipt Checker, Shopper Accused of 46 Thefts Worth $58,000 at Sunrise Sam’s Club

A Sam’s Club receipt checker and a Sunrise man were arrested after police said they carried out a scheme that stole more than $58,000 in televisions and other merchandise from the Sunrise store.

According to Sunrise Police Department arrest records, Brenda Jacqueline Gayle Archer, 57, of Lauderhill, and Troy Sidney Lawrence, 36, of Sunrise, were arrested on July 14 on charges of grand theft and scheme to defraud.

Records indicate the investigation began earlier this month after an assistant manager at the Sam’s Club at 13550 West Sunrise Boulevard reported that an internal review found missing televisions and other high-dollar merchandise.

According to police, the company’s investigation included surveillance footage, transaction records, and customer receipts, which revealed what investigators described as a recurring theft scheme.

Police said Lawrence repeatedly purchased inexpensive items while leaving the store with expensive merchandise he had not paid for. Archer, who was assigned to verify customer receipts at the exit, allegedly allowed him to leave without checking the contents of his shopping cart.

One example cited in the arrest reports occurred on June 8, when surveillance video and purchase records allegedly showed Lawrence buying a television wall mount before leaving the store with two Samsung televisions that had not been scanned or paid for.

Investigators reviewed six months of surveillance footage and identified 46 separate incidents in which Lawrence allegedly exited the store with unpaid merchandise while Archer was working at the receipt-checking station.

According to police, Sam’s Club determined the verified losses from the scheme exceeded $58,000.

Both Archer and Lawrence were arrested and booked into the Broward County Jail.
