Piper High School is getting ready for the postseason, with the girls team clinching the top spot in the District Championship and one player achieving a milestone.
They went 14-3-2 this year and were led by Lauren Gentiles. She had 35 goals this year and recently scored her 100th in her high school career. Allison Knowles added 14, while Isabel Ocasio scored seven, and Avani Medina and Madison Delamotte had six. Melory Delamotte and Christelle Lozano also scored this year, while Ocasio shined in the net.
They had a bye in the opening round of the postseason and play Coral Springs High School in the District Semifinals on Monday, January 28 at 7 p.m. Fort Lauderdale High School will play Monarch High School in the other semifinal game. The winners of these games will play in the Final on Thursday, January 30 at 7 p.m.
The boys soccer team had only five wins this year in 19 games, coming against Miramar, Hollywood Hills, Dillard, Somerset Prep, and Stranahan High School. Fitz Duclosy led the team in goals, followed by Judley Poitevien, Eric Calderon, Werikson De Souza, Dudeley Caget, Kevin Brisseay, and Nathan Bonillaa. They have had nine different goaltenders, but Carter McCray leads the team with 138 saves. Piper was seeded sixth and lost 2-0 to Boyd H Anderson High School l in the opening round of the playoffs.
In basketball, the girls team had lost four straight games, including a one-point loss against McArthur High School. However, they beat Fort Lauderdale High School on Wednesday before closing the week with a loss against South Plantation High School. They did recognize their lone senior, Jay Ellison, and head into the postseason at 9-9 this year.
The boys team beat Charles W. Flanagan High School but lost four in a row, falling to Cardinal Gibbons, McArthur High School, Fort Lauderdale, and South Plantation High School. They did recognize their seniors, Vashun Johnson and Alexander Pericles. The Bengals are also 9-9 heading into the District Tournament.
