CSC Softball Undefeated Season Ends in Regional Semifinals; 3 Former Players Compete in NCAA Tournament

All season, the Coral Springs Charter softball team got incredible pitching, and despite going 25-1-2, the Panthers had their run end in the Regional Final against Somerset Academy on Friday.

“It was a solid season,” Head Coach Mark Momtimurro said. “One extra-inning loss with 25 wins along with a District and BCAA Championship,” Our pitching really carried us throughout the entire season. At CSC, we have one goal: To play at a standard that finds you a path to the state finals. We came up short, regrettably.”

The Panthers fell in extra innings, despite a dominant pitching performance from Sophia Bertorelli. She struck out the first nine batters and finished the game with 19 strikeouts, with the only run scoring on an error after a Somerset base runner appeared to leave early. Not only was she able to steal the base, but she came around to score on the same play.

“Umpires are humans, and they make mistakes,” Montimurro added. “In high school, we don’t have the luxury of challenging via video replay. If we did, we would’ve challenged, the play would’ve been overturned, and the game would have stayed tied.”

CSC previously beat Ramson Everglades 12-0 behind a combined no-hitter from Sophia and Courtney Wahlbrink on May 10. Kate Maston and Heather Robertson knocked in two runs, while Addison Michel, Bella Bertorelli, Stephanie Basso, Jessica Sacca, and Kiana Gutierrez knocked in one.

In the semifinals, CSC beat Westminister Academy 2-0 behind a complete game shutout from Sophia Bertorelli. She allowed only three hits and struck out 15. Jessica Sacca recorded both hits for the Panthers and also had an RBI.

Offensively, Michel led the team with a .476 batting average. Sacca, Maston, and Julia Estroff hit at least .400 or better. At the same time, Alivia Taibl, Robertson, and Bella batted over .300. Basso finished second in home runs and had the game-winning hit in the Big-Eight Championship.

CSC will also have three players set to compete in the NCAA Tournament, while another was recognized with an award in their conference tournament.

Lindsey Garcia will play with Auburn University, Shannon Doherty is set to compete for UCF, and Emily Estroff with Liberty University.

Garcia and Doherty combined to hit 17 home runs this year and drive in 54 runs. Emily, the older sister to Julia, went 3-1 on the mound with 24 strikeouts.

While Brianna Godfrey and Marshall University just missed out on the NCAA Tournament, the former sensation was named to the ALL-Tournament team after the team reached the Conference Championship game.

Sara Berthiaume, Bridget Dunham, and Cassidy Crump were well over .300 for FAU, Indian River State, and Flagler College.
