Jada Cortese {BSO}
A Sunrise woman is facing a felony charge after police say her therapist thwarted her alleged plans to murder her mother.
According to a Sunrise Police Department report, Jada Marie Cortese, 18, was arrested on July 24 following an investigation that was prompted by a call from Cortese’s therapist, who alerted authorities after the teen allegedly expressed an intent to obtain a gun and kill her mother.
Records show that officers responded to the family’s home near the 12000 block of Northwest 32nd Manor and detained Cortese at the scene. While being escorted to a patrol vehicle, Cortese allegedly turned to her mother and said, “I’m going to kill you,” in the presence of the arresting officer, a statement captured on the officer’s body-worn camera.
Further investigation revealed that earlier that morning, Cortese had sent a large number of alarming text messages to her mother, including statements such as “I’ma kill you then kill myself,” and “Ima shoot you in the back of your head.”
Investigation records show the texts were confirmed by the mother and uploaded to police evidence systems. The mother told police the threats followed an argument about her not waking Cortese up for her job readiness summer camp program.
Cortese was arrested and later admitted to having made the threats. She was transported to the Broward County Main Jail and held without bond.
No weapon was recovered during the incident, and no injuries were reported.
