The Women’s Club of Coconut Creek awarded over $17k towards 13 scholarships to deserving high school seniors based on their academic accomplishments and community service activities.
One of the recipients was Alyssa Bianchi, a Coconut Creek resident, and recent Pompano Beach High School graduate.
She plans to attend Florida Atlantic University this fall to study English and pursue a career as an English teacher.
“I am really grateful for this scholarship, and it will help me earn a degree,” she said.
She has a 4.4 GPA and wrote an essay about her accomplishments as a lifeguard with Broward County Parks and Recreation and her career goals. She is dual-enrolled at Broward College.
Her mother, Ariana, is very proud of her accomplishments. “Alyssa has worked very hard in high school, and she is looking forward to pursuing a career teaching English,” she said.
The Women’s Club held an award presentation and reception on May 20 at the Coconut Creek Recreation Complex. The scholarship winners, their families, and club members enjoyed a social event complete with refreshments.
Scholarships ranged from $1,000 to $2,000. The amount students received was based on a scoring rubric that included academic achievement and community service.
Next year, Margaret Lancaster will chair the committee. “….we are going to base the criteria for winning a scholarship on financial need and community service in Coconut Creek. We will look at grades, but we want to open it up to a wider variety of students,” she said.
Lancaster hopes to get more financial support from local businesses and corporations. She wants to open the scholarships to all seniors who attend school in Coconut Creek, as they are currently limited to seniors who live in the city.
Over the next few days, she wants to connect with previous winners to see these scholarships’ positive impact on their lives. Those who wish to participate can email womensclubofcoconutcreek@gmail.com
