Piper High School wrapped up the fall sports season with a playoff run, and one player signed to play in college.
The football team finished the regular season with a 6-4 record and went on to defeat Charles W. Flanagan High School in the opening game, 24-12. However, their run ended in the Regional Semifinals following a 42-6 loss against Southridge High School. The lone touchdown from the Bengals came from Jonathan Rivers on a kickoff.
Maksim Steurber finsihed the game with 47 passing yards, while Jahnard Young ran for 79 yards and caught three passes for 33 yards. Defensively, Jaiden Watson led the team with nine tackles.
Steuber finished the season with five touchdown passes while Young ran for 1395 yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. Amare Jones was the leading receiver with 193 yards, with Isaiah Monestime leading the team with two receiving scores.
Defensively, Jaytoin Thomas led the team with 51 tackles while Luchung Manyou recorded five sacks. Alex Gammage picked off two passes while Jahmani Chin-Suer recorded two picks and officially signed to play at Florida International University.
In the last two years, Chin-Suer finished with 62 tackles and picked off three passes as a junior. The team reached the Regional Semifinals in both seasons, winning a total of 17 games. He will get set to play for a college team that competes in the Conference USA and went 7-5 this year, qualifying for a bowl game for the first time since 2019.
“I’m excited about his ability to play special teams and to also play a factor on defense in all different positions,” FIU Defensive Back Coach Anthony Gaitor said. “I see him making an impact at nickel and a guy who will be ready to play when his name is called.”
